The Jordanian position on the Palestinian issue

The Palestinian issue in all its components is the core of the conflict in the region, and Jerusalem is one of the main pillars of the Palestinian issue and the Arab-Israeli conflict, and it is core, in which all Nationalism, Patriotism and religious dimensions are manifested, and in the quest to finding a just and peaceful settlement to the conflict for decades, the Jordanian, Arab and Islamic political position has focused on the need that any political process should contain the end of the Israeli occupation to the Arab territories occupied in 1967, including Jerusalem, and the recognition of the Palestinian refugees rights of return and compensation in accordance with resolutions of international legitimacy, also the right of the Palestinian people of self-determination on their land and country, Otherwise, regional and international peace and security will be at risks.

As for what concerns Jerusalem, as it is the main issue in the Arab-Israeli conflict, which carries the possibility of internationalizing the conflict and thus out of control for its status to Arabic, Islamic, and Christian all around the globe,

The Jordanian position on the Palestinian issue is based on a set of constants, which can be summarized as follows:

First, the establishment of an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state on the lines of the Fourth of June of 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, represents a vital interest to the Jordanian state, just as the establishment of a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace is a strategic option for the Arabic and Jordanian peoples together. Therefore, Jordan supports all serious efforts that seek to achieve the two-state solution within a specific period of time and with clear mechanisms.

Secondly, any final solution must address all fundamental issues in accordance with international legitimacy and the terms of reference of the peace process, especially the Arab Peace Initiative with all its elements.

Third: all the Substantive issues, namely refugees, Jerusalem, security, borders, settlements, and water, are issues that directly affect the vital interests of the Jordanian state, and any solution for them must fully take into consideration these higher Jordanian interests, agree to them, and achieve them.

Fourth: Jordan will not accept any arrangements or settlement that do not fully preserve its vital interests related to all issues, especially Jerusalem, refugees, and security, or any arrangements that affect its security and the security of its people, or its territorial sovereignty in any way, or any solution that detracts from the establishment of an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state on the lines of the Fourth of June of 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Fifth: Jordan will not accept any violation of its citizens rights from Palestinian refugee origins in any way, especially the right of return and compensation in accordance with UN resolutions, and will fulfill its responsibilities in obtaining and protecting these rights, just as Jordan has rights and entitlements as the largest host country for Palestinian refugees.

Sixth: Jordan's firm position is that East Jerusalem is occupied Arabic land and must be the capital of the Palestinian state, and therefore it won’t be acceptable any solution that leads to changing the status of East Jerusalem as an occupied city by Israeli occupation that should be ended, like all the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967.

As for the Islamic and Christian holy sites and the care and guardianship carried out by His Majesty the King, Jordan will continue its duty to care for, protect, maintain, and respond to all violations targeting east Jerusalem, its holy sites, and its people.
